Series 2 of Tiny Acts of Bravery is available to you, my lovely Substack community, exclusively on this platform, for paid subscribers.
I had been wanting to talk to
for some time, for many reasons, but in part because she, like me, is a serial memoirist. She has written four, beautiful, expansive memoirs - Slow Motion, Devotion, Hourglass and Inheritance - in addition to her prize winning novels. I spoke to her from her home in Connecticut, and our conversation was everything I hoped it would be. If you’re interested in life writing and memoir, this is definitely a conversation for you, and we discussed, among other things, family secrets, the long term effects of trauma, and when to share the bad as well as the good, even when that feels uncomfortable. Do let me know what you thought of the conversation in the comments.LIVE DISCUSSION ON GRIEF: THURSDAY 13th FEBRUARY 7.30pm GMT
My next live zoom discussion will be on grief, and is taking place this coming Thursday at 7.30pm UK time for paid subscribers - you can find the link to join at the bottom of this post.
I really hope as many of you as possible will join me, and that this will be a safe, supportive place to speak together - or simply listen - about the way grief has effected us and changed us. Put it in your diary; I’d love to see you there. I encourage anyone who joins these chats to take part, but if you prefer to just be there to listen, that’s absolutely fine too; whatever you feel most comfortable with. And if there are other topics you’d like to discuss, let me know in the comments below (or via DM if you prefer.)
