Oh! Your insight on poetry is wonderful and yes, to answer you: so useful. I’ve looked up Snow by Moniz and read it: I am touched by the poem’s vibrancy and poignancy. And, in particular, l loved what you wrote here: “I see poetry as little darts of emotion and darts of understanding that hit me, and are incredibly beautiful to live with as well.” Thank you very much for taking the time to write out your thoughts and share them with us. Would love to hear more of your poetry recommendations!

Thanks so much for your generosity and honesty in answering all these. As a serial ‘ex-pat’ and now repatriated for 9 years it’s fascinating to read your answers and nod along. I also have a husband who is away much of the time and am so familiar with that ‘capsule’ feeling that you describe so well. Have a lovely weekend. x

I have to confess. Haikus send me through the roof. I fucking hate them. Sorry.

I recall you saying that you’d started out writing novels and wondered if you’d revisit the genre. I also read more non-fiction, and The Giant Skyline comes out just before my birthday so I hope all the hints I’ve dropped pay off! Really looking forward to reading it.

Somehow I clicked and you were answering questions before I consciously chose to, Clover. I'm glad I did. I enjoyed hearing your voice.

The questions about single parenting interested me most. I'm writing a parenting memoir based around some difficult years as a single mum in Sydney, Australia.

It’s so lovely to hear you chatting like we’re all hanging out. Thank you for taking the time, and also for answering my question about expat life and being tugged between worlds. As I listened, I remembered reading about “third culture kids” years ago and feeling validated. I find that liminal space between worlds fascinating.

Thank you so much for your time answering these Clover. I was preparing a roast chicken while watching and when you answered my question about your time as a single parent it made me cry over my chicken! I also find being a single parent joyous, but people tend to feel sorry for my situation and it frustrates me that I have to convince people all the time that I am not just OK but I'm thriving (probably better than thriving, what would that be?). I also find it liberating because it is so much easier than my married life was. Please write about this more - I have a quote you wrote in The Wild Other saved in a notebook of favourite quotes: 'That summer, the summer I was first alone as a single mother with them, was like a gift I unwrapped again and again'. It's so nice to hear somebody else expressing my life as a single parent and how lucky I feel to have this life.

So much is popping out at me here from this, Clover. The independence capsule, that is a very familiar bubble. Pushed into it by circumstance, the raggedness of that space; I had a marriage crumble for this reason and other reasons including disability, role imbalance and domestic dross frankly!

Also, ALL the Love for Rob Delaney and ALL the LOATHING for those pesky DC mosquitoes!!

Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) 2 day festival at National Museum of the American Indian .. ALL the stars for their Death fest.

Dear Clover, I meant ' interiority ' not inferiority! Sounded like 'inferiority ' is how it read when you answered my question ? Must have been my predict ive text sp... I' m so sorry , and upset about ' inferiority' must sound !I would never ever use such a word as to describe anything you have expressed . I so admire your work and your honesty and deep humanity, which are the qualities that matter to me in an artist .Thank you for answering my question in your beautiful words.

Also I meant to say I write fiction if you want to of course, but I don't especially want you to because as you say you have heaps of fascinating and useful things to write about from living your life which I am very keen to read! I am drawn to non fiction more and more although I really love Deborah Levy's work fiction Hot Milk & August Blue and her three volumes of memoir. x
